Where I’ve Been Part 1: Concerts

I’ve been slacking the last couple weeks with getting new content up.  I’ve been out with family a lot.  I probably won’t see them all for another couple months, so I took advantage of the opportunities.  Here is part one of my adventures.

August 7-9, 2009 I’ll call the concert weekend.  That Friday night D and I traveled to a small town 40 minutes away to see some of his friends perform.  The group calls themselves Olive Street Band and their inspiration is Bruce Springsteen among others.  Although I didn’t know a lot of the songs that they sang, I thought they were great performers!  We really enjoyed getting to spend some time with them during their breaks.

Be sure to visit their Facebook fan page or their web site for more info!

We drove back home that night to get ready to go back to our home town the next day.  While D stayed in town with his family, I snagged my little sister and headed to Davenport for Rock the River.  RTR is part of the Billy Graham Foundation.  We saw Franklin Graham speak as well as some fantastic (very contemporary) Christian bands perform.  The lineup included GRITS, The Afters, Decemberadio, Fireflight, and my favorite, Flyleaf!  I took some shaky video footage with D’s camera. We were pretty far back due to the unexpected huge crowd there but as soon as Flyleaf was up, E and I went to stand just outside the mosh pit.

Dollar$ and $ents: Aside from all the driving, it was a pretty cheap weekend.  It cost nothing to see OSB perform, however I did purchase a couple rum and cokes for $6.  Rock the River was a $10 donation and I spent $8 on lunch for E and I.  I also bought some water and snacks before going because it was an all day thing and it was so hot!  That put me back another $8.

The night concluded with Franklin Graham making some closing remarks and encouraging the concert-goers to seek God.  Although I’ve been spending more time with God lately, I went up to get one of the packets the helpers were handing out.  I figured a little extra help can’t hurt ;-)   It included a pen, some commitment information, and the Gospel of John.

“Jesus, You died upon a cross and rose again to save the lost.  Forgive me now of all my sin.  Come be my Savior, Lord, and Friend.  Change my life and make it new.  And help me Lord, to live for You.” ~Salvation Poem

On the heels of their recent lithium ion drill driver combo release, SKIL is back at it with two brand new offerings in the woodworking / capentry department: the RAS800 and RAS900 Smart Design Router Tables (official site).

Both of SKIL’s router tables were designed for the junior and mid-level woodworker–someone who wants the capabilities of a router table without the usual $300-500+ price tag.  As a bonus, for those of us without much tool storage space, both tables fold to less than 10 inches high and store neatly on a workbench or garage shelf. For more information, check out the full SKIL Router Table Review.

10 Ways to Save Money on Books

Filed under: fun, saving money — Tags: books, discounts, reading, saving money — K @ 4:05 PM

To me, my love of reading is both a blessing and a curse – I have this undying thirst for knowledge. There’s nothing like curling up with a good book and a steaming cup of hot chocolate or herbal tea to learn something new! At the same time, that “thirst” can get overwhelming, especially when I have to put reading on the back burner. I feel like I can’t read fast enough to keep up with the growing list of books I want to read.

MOVIE MONDAYS IN DECEMBER #1

My husband and I enjoy going to movies together, and try to make it out a couple times a month. Unfortunately, at nearly $20 just for tickets to a single show, and another $10 for food, the cost becomes somewhat prohibitive. Fortunately, there are many ways to save a little $$ when going to the movie theater.

Here are a few of the things we try, generally using these tips you can reduce the cost of going to the movies by over half, and it doesn’t have to involve sneaking in food in your purse or coat :)

Free Movies! Need I say more?

A Redbox DVD case
Image via Wikipedia

Redbox has become my favorite way to rent movies.  It’s conveniently located in our grocery store, so I don’t have to waste time and gas going all the way across town to rent an overpriced movie.  The Redbox locations are usually in busy places that are open long hours such as fast food restaurants and grocery stores.  You can also see what movies are available at all kiosks and reserve movies from the comfort of your own home before picking it up.

The movies are only $1 + tax per night and I like this “freedom”.  I feel like I pay for the time I watch the movie.  With RedBox, I return the movie by 9pm the following night or I get charged another dollar for another night.  When I rent a movie elsewhere, I usually don’t watch it over multiple days – I watch it once.  At this point I forget to return it three or four days later, incurring another $4 charge.

In addition to the dollar movies, RedBox offers multiple ways to get one night free.

  • Sign up for their emailings – you get a free rental for being a new member
  • Enter your cell phone on their website and opt in to receive texts every Monday
  • Free movie Wednesdays (so far only for March) by getting a code off their blog

The following messages have come straight from RedBox.

GET A FREE NIGHT’S RENTAL EVERY MONDAY… Sign up for Free Movie Mondays! Join the Redbox Free Movie Monday SMS program and get a promo code sent to your phone every Monday!

It’s March Movie Madness for Redbox, so get in the game… on Wednesdays! Visit Redblog every Wednesday in March for your Free Movie Wednesday code. Then visit your local Redbox kiosk for your FREE 1 NIGHT’s RENTAL.

I’ve used multiple cards and email addresses to receive the codes.  One that I’ve gotten twice is BREAKROOM.  There are also sites and forums out there catered to finding new RedBox freebie codes.

  • InsideRedBox keeps track of all new and expired codes, passing them on to you for free.
  • Slick Deals also has an entire thread devoted to RedBox codes.

Happy Movie Watching ;-)
