DIY Curb Appeal: 7 Simple Steps to Clean Up Your Exterior

It doesn’t take a landscaper or designer to make your house look good on the outside. All it takes is a little organizing, arranging, cleaning and upkeep and you can achieve a gorgeous exterior. Here are a few simple and inexpensive tips for increasing your curb appeal this spring. Set aside a
Saturday for some shopping to pick up the items you need and execute your curb appeal plan on a Sunday.

Step 1: Sweep it Up
Get out your broom and start sweeping! Sweeping your porch can make it look much better. Whether your porch is brick or wood, sweeping removes dust, dirt and other fine particles from your porch. If you have the time, give it a quick rinse with a garden hose.

Step 2: Hang Flower Baskets
A flower basket or two can give your house a great boost. For under $20, you can add charm and life to the outside of your home. Select a flower color that will complement the color of your home. Avoid selecting flowers that are in full bloom. While they look great at the store, it’s a sign that
they’ve been there for a while. Instead, select a basket whose flowers are starting to bloom and bring them to life at home.

Step 3: Trim Shrubbery
Take a few hours to trim the bushes and shrubbery around your home. If you don’t have trimming equipment, ask a neighbor if you can borrow his. You don’t need to be skilled in shrubbery trimming to make your bushes look good. Simply even them out and it will make a huge difference. If minor landscaping is really not your thing, hire a landscaping maintenance service for a one-time spring cleanup. For about $100, you can get your shrubbery trimmed properly.

Step 4: Paint
A fresh coat of paint for your porch is one of the least expensive ways to increase your curb appeal. For a quick job, paint the posts and rails in an exciting new color to complement your brick or siding. Alternatively, paint the entire porch or siding. You’ll probably need to set aside an entire
weekend just for that.

Step 5: Clear Clutter
Homeowners often don’t realize how unsightly small items around the perimeter of the house can look. Remove garbage and recycling bins from the side of your home to the back. If you store bikes, tools, hoses or other items around your home, move them to the back. For under $50, you can
purchase a hose holder that can be affixed to the wall of your home. Your property will look more orderly and have a lot more appeal without a hose lying on the driveway or lawn. Don’t forget about porch clutter. Get a plastic container to store balls and other clutter you may have around your
porch.

Step 6: Lighting
Low-voltage outdoor lighting is a great way to add some light to the outside of your home, as curb appeal counts at night too. There are several different options, from a porch light to driveway lights or various landscape lighting. The least expensive option is a porch light. Visit a local home improvement or gardening store for a wide selection of different porch light styles.

Step 7: The Extras

. Mailbox – If yours is old and worn, replace it. There are some really great innovative and creative mailboxes on the market. See what you can find in your area to add some color and life to your porch or yard.
. Address sign – Make your own or get some fresh new numbers.
. Porch mat – Give yours a rinse or buy a new one on sale.

Something has been bothering me. I’m attracted to the real food movement and have been was making progress eating more real food. I try not to eat processed foods and have been limiting packaged powders. I was getting good at grocery shopping and finally staying either in or close to our budget. Then something happened. I’ve read quite a few blogger’s out there get their groceries for a little bit of nothing thanks to coupons and rebates and this intrigued me. I subscribed to the Sunday paper for $7 per month to get coupons. If it didn’t work out, I could easily cancel. Here’s how it went…

Week #1: Wow! I saved $10 on groceries! Crap – I just spent double our budget.

Week #2: Wow! I saved $13 on groceries! Crap – I just spent double our budget, again.

Week #3: Wow! I saved $16 on groceries! Crap – I just spent almost double our budget. The real food is disappearing from our cart

Week #4: Wow! I saved $30 on groceries and only went a little over budget! Cart filled with processed foods

At this point I feel like I fell into a trap. It’s winter in Iowa and there are no markets around here. The nearest grocer that sells a decent supply of locally grown meats and organic produce is one hour away. We need to save money and I actually ended up spending more, not just monetarily, but with our health as well. In the last month, even though we watched what we ate during the holidays, D and I have both gained weight. Our cabinets are getting more and more full, leading us to snack on, guess what, crap foods throughout the day. At this point, I feel stuffed and upset to my stomach. I blame the cereal and HFCS-laden white bread.

Week #5: Well, we’re stocked up on canned soups, fruits, and veggies. We also have plenty of powdered cake, pancake, and cupcake mixes as well as cereal. We did buy quite a bit more fresh produce than usual due to the store’s 80th anniversary sale. We ended up $5 under budget and saving 25% off of our total bill due to the coupons. Saving money makes D really happy.

I had worked out a system and kept a budget and was purchasing real food before all this couponing business. Now we’re so into clipping, we have a stockpile of “Q’s” that we can dig through and use without going over budget. I’m feeling much better this week and am thinking of a plan to get more good food back into the cupboards.

I have found that many whole food producers do actually have coupons! Many I can’t use around here, but my grocer does carry a few products. Some whole foods retailers give away copies of magazines that have coupons in them or even coupon books! I already have plans for a garden around our fire pit. I have some herbs, garlic, a grapevine, and rhubarb planted around the house – that was my first step last year ~ edible landscaping!. This year I’ll be adding some veggies and another grapevine.

The following is a guest post by Marcy Tate.

Greening your cleaning is not only good for the planet, it’s good for your pocket. It’s pretty simple to green your cleaning and you’ll notice the savings right away. Clean better and feel better in 2010 by following some of these eco-friendly cleaning tips:

1. Natural Cleaning Products –You can reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals found in chemical based cleaning products by using inexpensive, natural cleaning products found right in your pantry. Using vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice is not a new idea, however it is often overlooked. Make a separate area away from your pantry to store vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice. It will remind you to go green when you clean.

Vinegar

Vinegar has many cleaning uses. Vinegar cleaning involves diluting vinegar with hot water in a bucket or in a spray bottle. Use it for washing hardwood floors, windows, toilets, tubs and more. Vinegar is great for removing hard water stains from glass shower doors. You can purchase vinegar in bulk from warehouse stores or buy it at your local grocery store for under $4 a gallon.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and stain remover. It is great for removing stains from clothes. Just add some baking soda to a hot-water load of clothes. Other great uses for baking soda include unclogging drains and removing odors from a garbage disposal. Some baking sodas contain aluminum. Check the ingredients of the baking soda you select to make sure it does not contain aluminum. Some studies suggest that aluminum exposure is linked to diseases, such as Alzheimer’s.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice has similar cleaning capabilities to vinegar. Also acidic, lemon juice can disinfect sinks and toilets.

Simple Combinations

Try these natural cleaning product combinations for quick, easy and eco-friendly cleaning:

Multi-purpose cleaner: Dilute baking soda, castile soap, water and a few drops of any essential oil.

Clog remover: Pour ½ C. to 1 C . of baking soda down the clogged drain. Then pour ½ C. to 1 C . of vinegar down the drain. Wait about 15 minutes and flush with very hot water.

2. Green Cleaning Products – Green cleaning products refer to products made from non-toxic, biodegradable and renewable resources. Green cleaning products are manufactured by companies that produce chemical-based cleaning products. Not all green cleaning products are as green as they claim to be. The EPA does not require manufacturers to list all ingredients in household cleaners. Check the labels of the products to be sure they are eco-friendly; mineral or plant-based ingredients are a sign that they are eco-friendly.

Choose refillable containers when purchasing green cleaning products to help you avoid the need to purchase a bottle each time. Tip: Don’t throw away your old cleaning products. It’s better to dispose of them at a toxins recycle center that accepts cleaning product waste.

3. Get Rid of Disposables – Disposable cleaning supplies are filling up landfills at alarming rates. All types of disposable cleaning products, such as dusting cloths, paper towels and cleaning wipes should be replaced with reusable rags and microfiber towel or cloths. An even greater cost-effective method is to cut up old T-shirts and undershirts and use them as rags. A great perk is that you can choose the size of the rag.

4. Water Conservation – Washing dishes with an open tap can use up to 20 gallons of water a day. Instead, fill the sink, dishpan or bowl with water. Closing the tap can save 10 gallons , which equates a few hundred dollars a year off your water bill. An additional way to green your dishwashing is to cut down on your dishwasher use by running the dishwasher only when it is completely full.

5. Hang Your Laundry – Hanging laundry is extremely eco-friendly. It can save you money by lowering your gas and electric bill. Hanging laundry reduces your gas and electricity usage. It also eliminates the need for dryer sheets, which cuts down on waste.

It’s that time of year again! The Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals are gradually getting posted as we eagerly wait to see how good or bad the discounts are this year. For those who may not know, Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving. It’s a day when many businesses make a profit and are in the black. It’s also a day when greed takes over many people and bad things can happen. Cyber Monday is the online version of Black Friday happening the Monday after Thanksgiving when people go back to work and apparently spend the day shopping online…

Going from personal experience, when the economy is good, there are a lot of freebies and awesome discounts. When the economy isn’t great, the deals aren’t great either. However, this year many businesses are taking part in online pre-Black Friday sales and not waiting until Thanksgiving weekend. I’ve looked through some of the deals and so far there isn’t anything that has sparked my interest. I’d love a new digital SLR camera, but the deals I’ve seen for both the pre-sales and Black Friday aren’t good enough to warrant a purchase. See the below links for posted Black Friday ads and the pre-Black Friday sales that are happening right now!

Do you have a favorite Black Friday site you go to? Mine is GottaDeal which shows bargains all year long on a forum, but also has a Black Friday site that lists the Black Friday ads as they come out. The following ads are currently listed:

Gander Mountain

During my shuttle from the airport to the Las Vegas Hilton, the driver explained how to get cheap tickets if you hadn’t purchased any yet. I already had two Cirque Mystere tickets, but there were three of us that wanted to go so I checked out Tix 4 Tonight. Tix 4 Tonight sells discount vouchers usually the day of the show. The available showings post at 9:30 AM and the store opens at 10:00 AM. They also offer discounts for local exhibits (Bodies Exhibit at Luxor and Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum at The Venetian to name a couple) and discount vouchers for the local restaurants and buffets.

My Experience:

I used (or was with someone who used) the service three times. The first location I visited was at Hawaiian Marketplace. After standing in line for 15 minutes, Mom and I made it to a sales rep. The rep was friendly, helpful, and fast, explaining different exhibits we might be interested in. We purchased tickets for the Bodies Exhibit and Madame Tussaud’s and the tickets had to be used that evening. If we didn’t have enough time, we could bring the tickets back and trade them for tomorrow. We stopped at the Bodies Exhibit first and learned a lesson. The tickets that you purchase at Tix4Tonight have to be traded in for actual tickets at the event or exhibit. This meant standing in line another 10 minutes to trade the slips for actual tickets. Mom was only there for 2-1/2 days – all the waiting was annoying.

Since Darren and I had tickets to Mystere, after lunch the following day we stopped at the Bills Casino location across from our hotel, Bally’s to get a ticket for my mom. (I switched hotels when the rest of the family arrived in town.) Lesson #2 learned - when you purchase a voucher for a show, you’ve simply bought a seat for that show. So, you must haul your tush across town and trade that voucher in for a ticket as fast as your legs will carry you – the sooner you do the trade, the better seat you’ll get. You don’t get an assigned seat until you have an actual ticket from the show’s venue.

For buffets and restaurants, you pay a $2 or $3 service fee per person and they give you a discount pass. The average buffet we went to was over $18, so a 25% discount per person definitely helps.

There are now 7 locations along the strip:

Fashion Show Mall (strip entrance in front of Neiman Marcus)

Hawaiian Marketplace (along strip in front of Polo Towers)

North Strip (south of Riviera Hotel)

Showcase Mall (south strip near the giant Coke bottle)

Downtown (4 Queens Hotel at the Fremont Street Experience)

Bills Casino (on the corner between Bally’s and the Flamingo)

Casino Royale (across from the Mirage and next to Denny’s)

What I Liked:

Discounted tickets – the shows out here are expensive!

The employees were efficient

You get a $2 fee discount and entrance to the short (VIP) line if you bring your used ticket stubs back the next day

Online coupon for a fee discount

Many locations

What I Didn’t Like:

The long waits in line

Running around trading vouchers for tickets

If you’re not pressed for time and don’t mind waiting in lines or taking chances on ticket availability, Tix 4 Tonight may be for you. If you are staying at a casino-hotel that is the home venue for a show, you may be able to get discounted tickets there. For example, the Price is Right tickets are $50, but because I was staying at Bally’s (where the show is) I was able to snag tickets for $37.

There are also the freebie attractions at the casino-hotels.

Show in the Sky at the Rio

Pole dancers at Planet Hollywood’s casino in the table games area – no link, just something we observed

Fremont Street Experience – stage show and video shows

The Lion Exhibit at MGM Grand

There are a few other attractions that I didn’t list because I didn’t visit them. You can see them at About.com’s Vegas page.

Have you used Tix 4 Tonight? What did you think and did you save a lot? As far as the freebies go I really enjoyed the Bellagio attractions, how about you?

To me, my love of reading is both a blessing and a curse – I have this undying thirst for knowledge. There’s nothing like curling up with a good book and a steaming cup of hot chocolate or herbal tea to learn something new! At the same time, that “thirst” can get overwhelming, especially when I have to put reading on the back burner. I feel like I can’t read fast enough to keep up with the growing list of books I want to read.

Most recently I completed reading the Twilight series because I wanted to see what all the fuss is about. I’m currently reading Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, Permaculture magazine, the Bible, and a couple inspirational books. I only purchase fiction that I’ll re-read, textbooks for school that I often re-sell, and reference books. Following are some of my tips on saving money with your book addiction!

Most of the time, I find books I’m interested in online. I read the reviews on Amazon to see if the book is even worth looking into. If I’m still interested in it, I go to the bookstore or library to check it out. When I was a college student, I could go to the university library. I’ve studied at three different universities and all of them have had three-week check out periods, with the option to renew the books for another three week period – this gave me ample time to finish a book and not spend a cent. From there, I decide if I want to purchase the book. I rarely purchase items at a brick-and-mortar bookstore because I can usually find better deals online. If you’re not crazy about shopping online, there are other options for purchasing books at a discount.

Rent books through local library, college, or online.

Borrow or buy books from friends/coworkers.

Become a member of your local bookstore.

If you live near your alma mater, you may be able to get an alumni membership to use at the campus bookstore.

Visit used book stores.

Seek out bookstores going out of business.

Visit church sales, school sales, fundraisers, and bizarres.

Your local library may have an occasional or ongoing sale through the “Friends of the Library” group.

Check out new and used book websites such as Amazon and Half.

Check out eBay for one book or a “lot” of books. I recently saw a 25,000 book lot go for under $1000!

If you decide to purchase or rent books online, make sure you check a couple different sites for the best bargain and be sure the check on the seller’s reputability.

I just love reading! Ever since I was little, I’ve been reading for enjoyment. I was even inspired to write a few short stories based on what I read. Here are some of my favorite books over time:

MOVIE MONDAYS IN DECEMBER #1

My husband and I enjoy going to movies together, and try to make it out a couple times a month. Unfortunately, at nearly $20 just for tickets to a single show, and another $10 for food, the cost becomes somewhat prohibitive. Fortunately, there are many ways to save a little $$ when going to the movie theater.

Here are a few of the things we try, generally using these tips you can reduce the cost of going to the movies by over half, and it doesn’t have to involve sneaking in food in your purse or coat

Go to a matinee or a super matinee – you can save a couple dollars by going to an earlier showing or the first showing of the day, even on the weekends.

Join the theater’s club – Some theaters offer an MVP card: every time you purchase tickets or goods at the concession stand, points are added to the card. These points can then be redeemed for discounts and freebies. Check with your theatre.

Don’t be ashamed of your age – many theaters offer discounts for students up to 22, children, and seniors.

Discount, Dollar, or Cheap theaters – these theaters show movies usually a month after disappearing from the regular theaters, but at a discounted price.

Discount days – Wednesday’s seem to be a favorite around here. I’ve seen $1 admission at the cheap theatre and free 46 ounce popcorn at another theatre.

Stay tuned for more, or subscribe, because I’ll be posting more tips in the coming days!

Are you looking to save some extra cash each month? Who isn’t? Fortunately there is a easy solution to this problem and all it takes is about 15-30 minutes a week.

When looking for ideas to help cut our grocery bill, I found a new website Spend Smart Eat Smart. It was created by a dietitian at Iowa State University.

At this website, you can find ideas and tools to:

PLAN YOUR SHOP:

Figure your food dollar

Shopping at the Store

Preparing Meals

After shopping

There is even a blog where people can write in and discuss there food buying ideas and cooking tips.

I especially think PLAN AHEAD portion of the website is valuable for saving money. Studies have shown that when you make a shopping and meal plan for your family and grocery shop according to that plan, trips to the grocery store will cost a significant amount less. In fact, families on average report saving %10-15 on groceries when they go to the store with a list on paper for buying food for planned meals. With your plan in hand, you are more likely to resist one of the most expensive habits of grocery shoppers, impulse buying.

It’s simple, plan ahead and save. For 30 minutes a week you can save $100 a month, or $1200 a year. Now that’s a tasty deal!

I know it’s getting down to the wire, but I thought I’d mention that Father’s Day is tomorrow. I usually get D a little gift and a card. I really don’t like how the industry pushes holidays on us consumers. It’s makes us spend more money and feel stressed. I read somewhere today that the average amount spent on a Father’s Day gift is $87 ! (And in case you’re wondering, the average Mother’s Day gift was over $130.) For me $87 is too much. Then you add in the card and then the cards for the other men in your life (think husband, son, father, spouse’s father, grandfathers on both sides) and you can see why people have so many money problems around the holidays. So here I have some ideas for you!

Dollar stores are great for decent inexpensive greeting cards. This is the second time that I’ve shopped at a dollar store for them. They don’t look cheap either. I went to Dollar Tree just to see what their selection was like. I walked out with 5 cards and spent only $2.56! Their cards are $0.50 to $1 each.

Think about what kind of hobbies your favorite guy is into. Guys that like to cook might like a new grill utensil, an oven mitt or apron with their favorite sports team’s logo, a mortar and pestle for grinding herbs, or maybe some gourmet organic spices. Other popular hobbies include fishing, hunting, and cars. My dad likes Carhart stuff because it lasts a long time – he wears it to work, hunting, and for yard work.

The gardening man – It’s a little too late to order them now unless you do a belated Father’s Day gift but mushroom spawn are a very unique idea. They can be purchased for about $10+shipping. More desirable mushrooms (think morels and top of the line gourmet mushrooms) are more expensive at $30 and up. He might also enjoy a trip to a pick-your-own produce farm. Otherwise, since it’s summer, many home improvement and garden centers are running deals on plants and gardening tools.

The business man – I’m not too sure about this guy, because I don’t know any business-y type men. The traditional gift would be a tie. These are pretty reasonable at Kohl’s and JCPenney’s. Designer pens would be another option. And if the guy has a lot of little gadgets, maybe he needs a charging valet. These start at $15. Pricier options may include a power strip.

The movie man – This would be my D. Movie tickets are the obvious choice. If you have movie nights-in, you could purchase “movie theater” candies at your grocer or a small popcorn popper ($15-$30). If he has a theater room, find him some movie posters to hang up. If you go to theaters ahead of time, they may be willing to give you their outdated cardboard movie stands or hanging ads (if you have a lot of room to spare!). I knew a teacher who worked a second job at a theater – since the theater just throws the outdated move stuff away, she took some of the stands and decorated her classroom with them!

Maybe he likes personalized items. Personalized bar items like mugs, shot glasses, and flasks are easily found online because they’re popular groomsmen gifts.

Make dinner for the guy or take him out to eat – save some money too!. If you want to do something extra, take him for bowling or billiards, to a bar that hosts local bands, or to a movie.

Donate money to a charity he would support. Visit Charity Navigator to search for charities by category. Another thing that comes to mind is “adopting” (sponsoring) an animal at a wildlife refuge, nature center, or local animal shelter – the money helps to pay for that specific animal’s food and care for a given amount of time.

If you’re still not sure what to get him, the answer could be a gift card. I do this with my dad, the man who has everything, when I run out of unique ideas or time. And if you’re not sure what store to get the gift card from, go with cash, a visa gift card, or even an eBay gift card. I go the eBay route because he loves bidding on items.

Maybe he’s the guy that doesn’t care about these types of holidays – let him sit on his butt with a drink and the remote.

So now take some time and let that special guy know how much you mean to him… without spending a lot!
